The Catch Up – October 2024

Beast Mode / Recent Gone Fishing Launches

Happy Fall from us at Gone Fishing – as we close in on the end of the year we’re continuing to harvest the fruits of our busy year.

Beast Mode

Though he’s generally off my cultural radar, a few weeks ago future President Mr. Beast’s guide on how to work for his production company made waves with a section called “Use Consultants”:

Consultants is probably the wrong word there – I’d probably use the word “Experts” lest someone instead hire Mckinsey and pay a 23-year old $500/hr (not including the business class flight and 5-start hotel) to tell them what they’ve learned on the flight over and expect that to help them achieve their goal.

This is more or less in line with the philosophy behind Gone Fishing – there are a handful of useful things we can do at the highest level and a reasonable speed that unlock gains for our clients that are otherwise inaccessible. As we cycle through projects those skillsets get both wider and deeper – more alike to an artisan than an agency.

Launches

We had the chance this year to work with our friends and design heroes at Decade, the mighty NY-based branding duo responsible for brands like Khaite and Soft Services, on a major overhaul of one of the global leaders in the lab-grown diamond industry.

One of the main themes of our work this year has been pushing the limits of more limited platforms like Shopify to build world-class web experiences. Typography, art direction, and photography were absolutely dialed in here thanks to our design partners, allowing us to get out of the way and focus on execution, performance and small moments of delight throughout the site. The end result is one of our biggest, most refined eCommerce sites to date. Link

Medan

Earlier this year we worked with our friends at GrandArmy to build a site for new film production studio Medan, whose new film Eden premiered at Toronto International Film Festival in September, with the interesting wrinkle that it be in both English AND Arabic.

Not only a script I can’t parse, but something that required us to change the entire layout of the site to right-to-left at the press of a button. The final boss of internationalization. Plenty more of the site to see here as their portfolio of films expands over the coming months, so stay tuned.

Until next time,
